Caleb knew she understood exactly what he was implying. Samantha tensed even more beneath him. Her gaze became more spiteful as she glared silently up at him. He knew being rough with her like this played into all her prejudices and stereotypes of men, but he couldn’t risk the wolf making a second appearance in one night.

“Okay.” He lowered his hand slowly, pausing to see if she could be trusted to remain quiet. Thankfully, she did not hurl any more insults in his direction. “Let’s start again. Tell me about your husband.”

“Why?”

“I want to know.”

“You already know everything there is to know.”

“You haven’t told me anything.”

“Don’t play dumb, Caleb. You know there is no husband.”

“So you admit you lied to me. Why?”

“It was expedient.”

“Expedient?”

“Yeah, normally when you tell a man you’re married, he takes the hint and gets lost.”

“So you just wanted to get rid of me.”

“Geez, I’m glad I didn’t have to spell it out for you or anything.”

“Samantha.”

“What? Am I supposed to be all happy pinned to the ground and forced to answer questions you already know the answer to?”

“I don’t know the answers! Why the hell do you think I’m asking the damn questions?”

“It’s all part of the play.”

“What play?”

“This little contrived game Bruce and you are conducting…Don’t look at me like that. I know all about dogs. They run in packs and are loyal to each other.”

“For the last time, I am not a dog!”

“Wolf, right, less evolved than a dog.”

“Werewolf.” Caleb could barely get the words out. She was pushing it, and he only had a precious little patience left.

“Whatever.”

“That’s it.”

He couldn’t take any more of this. He jumped up and dragged her with him. This conversation was better conducted at home, where he had the advantage. He knew just what to do to get her talking.

“Where are you taking me?” Samantha was tugging on her arm, trying to wrest it free of his ironclad grip.

“Better you worry about what I’m going to do to you when we get there.”

“Like that’s going to make me trust you more.” That brought Caleb up short. He hated to admit she had a point. If he did what he wanted, he’d get his answers and earn even more of her distrust. That wasn’t the foundation he wanted to try to build a permanent relationship on.

Ah, hell. He continued dragging her toward the truck, but this time he wasn’t sure what he was going to do when he got there. The only thing he knew was he couldn’t have her standing with all her goodies hanging out in the middle of the road.

It pleased him when he loaded her into the truck and slammed the door that she didn’t attempt to jump right back out. He tried to build on that positive emotion as he walked around to his side. There was no helping the tension filling his body, but his mind was beginning to work again.

She didn’t say anything when he put the truck into gear and started back off down the road.
